Safety and Risks in Nanoscale Science
Dr. d’Hondt, Director of the R&D Interactions of Syngenta, visited the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI)
in Basel on 12 November 2007 and gave a talk at the Condensed Matter Seminar of the Physics Department
of the University of Basel, Headquarters of the SNI.
In his talk, Dr. d'Hondt showed the scientists the basics of Risk Assessment und discussed the relevance
of this topic for the growing field of Nanosciences and future applications.

Safety and risks in the nanosciences and nanotechnology were the subject of a work-shop that was held
by the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI) in Basel on 9 February 2007. Scientists from various Swiss
research institutions presented their latest findings on this subject area.

Within the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI) we take the concerns that
were recently voiced in the media regarding safety in nanoscale science and nanotechnology very
seriously. In the current debate, we clearly have to differentiate between unrealistic horror visions
and real safety issues. There are certain questions that need to be answered (e.g. possible toxicity
of nanoparticles). Long-term studies over several years are required. Research studies that will provide
the required data are currently planned or already underway – independent from a call for a moratorium.

This document wants to give some answers to questions concerning safety and risks in nanoscale
science. It does not claim to be complete but rather wants to give some basic answers intelligible
to all to a few important questions.
