Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI)

The PSI is a multidisciplinary research institute for natural and engineering sciences. The institute works in national and international collaboration with universities, other research institutes and private industry in the fields of solid state physics, materials science, elementary particle physics, biosciences, nuclear and non-nuclear energy research and energy-related environmental research.

The main focus of PSI activities lies in basic and applied research, chiefly in areas which are relevant for sustainable development and especially important for teaching and training, but which go beyond the resources available to individual university institutes. The PSI thus develops and operates complex research facilities, which call for particularly high standards of know-how, experience and professionalism. The PSI is one of the world's leading user laboratories for the national and international scientific community. Through its research, the PSI generates fundamental new knowledge and is committed to the application of this knowledge in industry.
