New structure of the NCCR

As we have announced in the recent issue of nanonews, the NCCR Nanoscale Science will receive a new structure. Instead of the original ten projects we will reduce the number to five. The restructuring will increase transparency, cooperation and communication between and within the projects and will finally increase the quality of our research. The new configuration of 5 projects will be fully implemented by June 1, 2005. The transition during the current 4th year is to financially continue with the old budgets, but to strengthen the collaboration according to the new 5-project-scenario. Additionally, we finalized several subprojects that are now mature or that have not yielded the desired results.
The new allocation of projects looks like this:

PROJECT 1 – Nanobiology and Nanomedicine

Project Leaders: Ueli Aebi, Andreas Engel
old project 1 (Nanotechnology in Medicine)
old project 3 (Nanotechnology for Cell and Molecular Biology)
parts of old project 2 (Nanotools)

PROJECT 2 – Quantum Computing and Quantum Coherence

Project Leaders: Klaus Ensslin, Daniel Loss
old project 4 (Experimental Manipulation of Quantum Systems)
old project 8 (Spin-Electronics and Quantum Information Processing)
parts of old project 2 (Nanotools)

PROJECT 3 – Atomic and Molecular Nanosystems

Project Leaders: Ernst Meyer, Hans Josef Hug
parts of old project 7 (Molecular Machinery and Devices)
old project 9 (Ultimate Limits of Measurements)

PROJECT 4 – Molecular Electronics

Project Leaders: Christian Schönenberger, Thomas Jung
old project 10 (Molecular Electronics)
parts of old project 7 (Molecular Machinery and Devices)

PROJECT 5 – Functional Materials by Hierachical Self Assembly

Project Leaders: François Diederich, Wolfgang Meier
old project 5 (Nanomaterials and Self Assembly)
old project 6 (Nanochemistry)
