On 19/20 May, the Review Panel Site Visit to the NCCR Nanoscale Science was held in Basel. After two days of
intensive work, including lots of presentations and discussions, the Review Panel came to the conclusion that
the NCCR Nanoscale Science is an excellent centre of interdisciplinary research that is unique in the world.
The Review Panel was deeply impressed by what the NCCR has achieved in less than 2 years. They see that the
NCCR will continue to be productive in the future and that the NCCR groups are at the forefront of their
fields. The strong interdisciplinary character of our centre makes it unique also on an international level.
Panel members were especially enthusiastic about the great number of excellent young scientists who are
working together across different institutes and across traditional disciplines. They were also impressed by
the professional use of electronic information tools, appreciated the know-how and technology transfer (KTT)
activities and the awareness of KTT issues within our NCCR, and the great proportion of women in our NCCR.
Despite the overall positive evaluation, there are certain areas for further improvement. This includes a
discussion about restructuring our 10 projects into five topics and the solution of our space problems. We
will now take up the discussion about these recommendations and will inform you about possible changes.

With participation of NCCR members, Location Switzerland organized a Nanotechnology Roadshow in the US in
February 2003. During the event, leaders of the Swiss Nanotechnology Industry and R&D impressively
demonstrated Swiss expertise in Nanoscale Sciences and Nanotechnology. They engaged themselves in an intensive
dialogue with the Nanotechnology community in the US.
The NCCR Nanoscale Science presented its research activities together with TOP Nano21 during the NanoTech 2003
that took place in February 2003 in Tokyo, Japan.

Snow, Science, Sun and Fun – these were important factors that made “Nanoscience in the Snow” for all
participants a great success. From 26 – 28 February, twenty-five NCCR members– PhD students, PostDocs and
Professors – gathered in Engelberg (CH) for an informal interdisciplinary meeting to exchange thoughts on
Nanoscale Science and the respective research projects of the participants. Besides scientific discussions
there was enough time left to get to know all participants, and to enjoy excellent food, snow and the perfect
weather.
